Naturalist Training

GFNMS staff offer an annual White Shark Naturalist Training (typically during the summer) to help naturalists leading on-the-water wildlife viewing trips in Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. The training provides:

• An overview of the White Shark Stewardship Project;
• Information on the rich diversity of biological resources found within the Sanctuary (PDF, 28MB);
  
• Training on how to provide a high-quality interpretive experience for the public (PDF, 1MB)
• White Shark natural history and highlights of local research;
• Conservation messaging (PDF, 1.8MB) surrounding White Sharks;
• An overview of the regulations and permit program (PDF); and
• Outcomes of the Sanctuary's White Shark Stewardship Monitoring Program; and
• Suggested reading list (PDF) for more information on White Sharks.

If you are a tour operator who is interested in applying for an education permit for shark educational tourism, the Naturalist Training is required. Additionally, each excursion is required to have a minimum of one naturalist on-board who has completed the training.
