Sanctuary Advisory Council
The Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council advises the sanctuary superintendent on priority issues and connects local communities with the sanctuary. The Advisory Council provides an opportunity for information exchange on issues affecting the health of the sanctuary. Members represent a variety of interests, from fishing to science to conservation. Members serve two to three year terms with a maximum of three consecutive terms in one seat. Meetings of the council are open to the public and provide a place where community interests, support, and concerns are heard.
The council operates under a charter and serves strictly in a voluntary, advice-giving role. The council provides an invaluable service as experts in their fields, advisors on potential sanctuary management decisions and representatives for the broader community. In addition to the council charter, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has developed a SAC Handbook that provides guidance for sanctuary advisory councils.
The Sanctuary Advisory Council (SAC) forms subcommittees and working groups to address council matters and sanctuary issues and to provide recommendations for sanctuary management strategies.
Recruitment for Advisory Council members occurs as seats become available. For more information, please visit our Council Recruitment page.
